Hockey Defeats Connecticut, 7-4

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) and sophomore forward Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ont.) each scored two goals to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 7-4 win over the University of Connecticut in collegiate hockey action Friday night. UMass improves to 2-5-1 on the season, while UConn drops to 2-5-0.
The Minutemen got a pair of early goals in the contest. Miljko scored his first on a power play, scoring off a rebound of a shot by junior forward Kris Wallis (Agassiz, B.C.) 5:33 into the contest. Freshman forward Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) notched his first goal of the season just 21 seconds later to give the Minutemen a 2-0 lead, but Evan Stenstud would score under a minute later to cut UMass? lead to one.
Miljko gave the Minutemen a second two-goal advantage with his second power play score of the night 1:32 into the second period, but the Huskies answered again in under a minute with a goal by Andy Huggett to keep the lead within a goal. Midway through the period, UConn would tie the game on a goal by Matt Herhal, but Jeff Turner answered with his first goal of the season to give UMass a 4-3 lead. After Kurt Kamienski tied the game again for the Huskies with 5:32 left in the period, Jeff Turner gave the Minutemen the lead again with a short-handed tally off a beautiful feed from senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) in the final minute of the period to take a 5-4 lead into the intermission.
Sophomore Jedd Crumb (Winnipeg, Man.) and Wallis each scored insurance goals in the third period to seal the UMass victory.
Junior Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) and sophomore Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) combined to make 13 saves to earn the win while Marc Senerchia made 35 saves in the UConn net.
UMass returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24, when it hosts Vermont. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
