Hockey Falls To Merrimack, 4-3

N. ANDOVER, Mass. - Cris Classen made 32 saves to lead Merrimack College to a 4-3 win over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action Saturday night. UMass is now 1-5-1 on the season, 0-4-1 in Hockey East, while Merrimack improves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.
Merrimack scored first when Sandy Cohen caught the upper corner of the net on a Warrior power play 6:07 into the first. UMass answered just over two minutes later when sophomore Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ont.) slipped a feed from senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) between the legs of Classen directly in front of the net. Merrimack retook the lead when John Pyliotis scored on the Warriors second power play of the night, ending a flurry of three consecutive shots and rebounds in front of the UMass goal.
UMass evened the score at 2-2 late in the second period on a shorthanded goal by Blanchard. Blanchard borught the puck up alone from center ice and caught the top corner of the goal with 3:24 left in the frame. The Minutemen took their first lead of the game with 1:10 left in the third period on Miljko?s second goal of the game that came on a scramble in front of the net.
Merrimack tied the game again 5:09 into the third period with the Warriors? third power-play score of the game, this one coming from Mike Rodrigues. Greg Classen scored what would prove to be the game-winner 1:23 later after taking a feed from Nick Parillo.
UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) finished the night with 23 saves.
UMass returns to action next Friday, Nov. 19, when it hosts non-conference foe Connecticut. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
