AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women?s tennis team captured its first win over the defending Division III national champion Amherst College on Friday, Oct. 8, in a 5-4 victory at home. The Minutewomen improve to 2-1 with the win.
Sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) picked up a big victory at No. 2 singles, with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Stephanie Fong. Sophomore Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) conquered Heather Cole in straight sets in the No. 3 slot, 7-5, 6-1, while junior Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga. ) defeated Paige Lawrence at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Beth Ebert (Westford, Mass.) also won big in the No. 6 position over Ashton Kienke, 6-0, 6-3.
UMass needed just one doubles victory to secure the win over the Lady Jeffs and it seized it right away. The tandem of senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) and Hamilton cruised past the duo of Jamie Cohen and Lawrence, 8-3, to win the match for the Minutewomen.
"The kids were really prepared to play today?s match," head coach Judy Dixon said. "And when one kid started to win, the rest really started to pull it all ogether. We always have great matches against Amherst College, and it all came down to who wanted it more."
UMass is next in action on Saturday, Oct. 9, versus UConn at 11 a.m. at the Upper Boyden Tennis Courts. The Huskies are 1-2 this season.
