WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior forward Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 1-0 win over Army in collegiate hockey action Friday night. UMass is now 1-3 on the season, while Army drops to 0-4-1 overall.
Neither team was able to score in regulation. While the first period was even offensively with Army holding a slim 13-11 edge in shots, UMass dominated the second and third periods, outshooting the Black Knights by a 39-6 margin. Blanchard took a feed from junior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) and circled around behind the net and shot from the left side of the net for the game-winner.
UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) made 19 saves for the shutout, while Army goaltender Corey Winer stopped 55 shots in the tough-luck loss.
UMass returns to action next Friday, Nov. 5, when it hosts Hockey East rival UMass Lowell. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
