Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Nick Stephens (Roseville, Minn.) scored the game-tying goal early in the third period to give the University of Massachusetts a 2-2 tie with UMass Lowell in Hockey East action Friday night. UMass is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference, while UMass Lowell is 2-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.

After a scoreless first period, the Minutemen broke into the scoring column. Senior forward Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) came in from center ice alone on the River Hawk goal and scored on a shorthanded situation 1:06 into the second frame. UMass Lowell stormed back on the same power play however, with Josh Reed scoring the equalizer at 2:14.

Entering the second intermission tied, UMass Lowell took its first lead of the game just 1:03 into the third frame when Brad Rooney converted a shot from the left post of the UMass net to take a 2-1 lead. The Minutemen tied exactly four minutes later when Stephens scored his goal. Stephens had come in on goal and got a shot that just trickled through the pads of goaltender Jimi St. John for the score. Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the third period or the overtime period.

UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) finished the night with 31 saves, while St. John made 27 stops in the River Hawk net.

The Minutemen return to action on Saturday night, Nov. 6, when they travel to No. 7 New Hampshire. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
