Hockey Falls To Northeastern, 4-1

BOSTON - Jim Fahey and Willie Levesque each had a goal and an assist to lead Northeastern University to a 4-1 win over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action Friday night. UMass is now 0-2-0 on the season, 0-1-0 in Hockey East, while Northeastern improves to 2-0-0, 1-0-0 in league play.
Northeastern scored first in the contest, taking advantage of a five-on-three power play opportunity. Jim Fahey took a feed from John Peterman between the faceoff circles and found the upper right corner of the net 6:54 into the first period. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead early in the second period when Todd Barclay scored Northeastern?s second power play goal of the night on a feed from Willie Levesque and Peterman. UMass answered with a goal by senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville,Ont.) who scored at 8:18 of the second period after taking a feed from freshman defenseman Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) who had dug the puck out of the boards.
Northeastern retook the lead under a minute later when Leon Hayward scored a shorthanded goal, taking a cleared puck from mid-ice on goal alone. The Huskies extended their lead to 4-1 when Levesque scored an unassisted goal with 1:36 left in the second frame. Neither team was able to score in the third period.
UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) finished the night with 29 saves, while Mike Gilhooly made 32 saves in the Northeastern goal.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 23 when it hosts No. 1 Boston College for its home opener. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
