AMHERST, Mass. - Jeff Farkas scored three goals to lead No. 1 Boston College to a 4-1 win over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action Saturday night. UMass is now 0-3-0 on the season, while BC improves to 3-0-0.
Farkas got the Eagles on the board midway through the first period with a goal at 9:46 from Brooks Orpik and Marty Hughes in a four-on-four situation. While neither team was able to score for the remainder of the first period, Brian Gionta gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead just 1:21 into the second period in another four-on-four situation.
Farkas then put away the Minutemen with a pair of goals in a 43 second span just over five minutes later ??one four-on-four, one power play ? to give himself a hat trick and BC a 4-0 lead. UMass sophomore Jedd Crumb (Winnipeg, Man.) scored with 24 seconds left in the second period on a power play to break up the BC shutout bid. The goal was assisted by brothers Jeff and Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.). The Minutemen mounted a strong offense in the third period ??outshooting the Eagles, 10-3 ??but were unable to pull the upset, despite outshooting BC, 33-30, for the game.
UMass returns to action on Friday, Oct. 29, when it travels to Army for a non-conference matchup. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
