HAMILTON, N.Y. - Sean Nolan scored a pair of third period goals to lead Colgate University to a 3-2 win over the University of Massachusetts in collegiate hockey action Saturday night. UMass is now 0-1-0 on the season, while Colgate starts at 1-0-0.
Colgate scored first in the game when Andy McDonald blasted a hard shot at 6:09 of the first period that banked off the shoulder of UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) and just trickled into the net. Colgate netminder Shep Harder made a great save with 2:10 remaining in the first to preserve Colgate?s 1-0 lead, stopping a one-timer by senior forward Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) from about four feet in front of the goal.
Senior forward Kevin Poulin (Lewiston, Maine) evened the score with 7:45 left in the second period, scoring his first career goal. Poulin collected a recbound on a scramble in front of the net and snuck a shot past Harder for the score.
Nolan scored the first of his two goals just 52 seconds into the third period, immediately following a UMass power play. The Minutemen answered when junior defenseman Joey Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) sent in a shot from outside the left faceoff circle, through a Colgate defenseman?s legs and into the net.
Helanen finished the night with 34 saves while Harder posted 19 saves for Colgate.
UMass returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22 when it travels to Northeastern for its Hockey East opener. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
