UMass Hockey Alumnus Cale Makar Earns Silver With Canada At Olympic Games

MILAN, Italy – University of Massachusetts hockey alumnus Cale Makar has earned silver with Team Canada at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics after scoring Canada's lone goal in the Gold Medal game on Sunday. Makar becomes the second former Minuteman to medal in ice hockey, joining Jonathan Quick who took home silver with Team USA in 2010 at the Vancouver Games.
Makar served as an alternate captain in Milano Cortina, his first Olympic games. He finished with six points on two goals and four assists in six contests.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Makar played two seasons at UMass (2017-19), winning the 2019 Hobey Baker Award and helping the Minutemen reach their first-ever Frozen Four in addition to being chosen as the 2019 Hockey East Player of the Year, and a CCM/AHA Hockey First Team All-American.
Makar has gone on to a storied NHL career with the Avalanche, winning a Stanley Cup in 2022 and two Norris trophies (2022 & 2025) and the 2022 Conn Smythe Trophy as the Stanley Cup MVP. A five-time NHL All-Star, Makar won the Calder Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year in 2020 and has amassed 485 points on 131 goals and 354 assists across 450 NHL regular season games.
On the international stage, Makar has represented Team Canada at the 2025 NHL 4 Nations tournament and the 2018 World Junior Championship, winning titles on both occasions.
