Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Falls To #10 Richmond, 14-4 In A-10 Championship Semifinal

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse was unable to overcome a quick start for No. 10 Richmond, falling 14-4 in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinal on Thursday morning at Sweeney Field. The Gorillas end the season at 9-6 overall, while the Spiders advance to the A-10 Championship Final at 12-3 on the year.
Senior Caelin Lewis registered a hat trick, while sophomore Zack Waxman had the lone additional tally for UMass. Senior Trace Hogan and junior Aiden Drunsic logged an assist apiece and senior Zach Auble collected a team-high three ground balls to go along with one caused turnover.
The Spiders had 12 different goal scorers on the day with Gavin Creo and Leo Caine each pocketing a pair. Caine (2g, 1a), Aidan O'Neil and Jack Ricciardi all had a team-best three points apiece.
Richmond opened the contest, netting the first seven tallies of the day before senior Caelin Lewis put UMass on the board with his eighth of the season with 1:18 remaining in the first quarter.
After the Spiders scored the first two of the second quarter, Lewis potted his second of the day to bring the Gorillas back to within seven, but that was as close as the squad would come in the contest.
Richmond finished the day with a 41-28 shot advantage and took the ground ball battle, 29-22. The Spiders were 3-for-6 in extra man opportunities, while UMass went 1-for-2.
Ryan Mazzariello made 10 saves in net for the Gorillas, while Owen Salanger logged one save. Zach Vigure turned aside in between the pipes for Richmond.
