Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball prepares for two midweek contests, highlighted by the Second Round of the 34th Baseball Beanpot. UMass heads to Boston, Massachusetts, to match up against Boston College to continue for the Beanpot Consolation game at Fenway Park on Tuesday, April 29, before hosting Siena on Wednesday, April 30. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 4 p.m., while Wednesday's game is slated or a 3 p.m. start.

The Minutemen moved to 12-25-1 on the season and 6-15 in the Atlantic 10 Conference after earning one win in a three-game weekend series against George Washington.

Boston College currently holds a 21-23 overall record, while Siena stands at 16-25 on the year.

Recap in a Minute
UMass fell to George Washington, 2-1, in the weekend series, picking up a 16-3 victory on Sunday in the series finale.

In game three, the UMass offense came alive early, exploding for eight runs in the first inning. Anthony Tirado strung together three hits, followed closely behind by Carter Hanson with two. Six other players tallied one hit each, which included Willi's fifth home run and Michael Toth's second of the season. Jack Beverly added his sixth double on the day. Tirado and Toht both scored three runs, while Matt Travisano, Willi and Reece McCarthy plated two apiece. Hanson and Willi batted in four runs each, matching a career-high for Hanson and marking a career-best for Willi. Beverly added two RBI on the afternoon.

Sam Belliveau received his first win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits, three walks and striking out two in a complete seven inning contest.

Minutemen in the Beanpot
Massachusetts has competed annually in the Beanpot since 1996 and captured the tournament crown six times (1996-98, 2000, 2008, 2012). Perhaps one of the most notable Beanpot pitching performances in program history came on April 22, 1997, when former Minuteman Scott Barnsby dealt a no-hitter at Fenway Park in the Semifinals against Northeastern. Barnsby's no-no was the first within the confines of the historic ballpark since 1965 and first such nine-inning performance by a UMass pitcher since 1957.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Beanpot Tournament was canceled, and the 2021 tournament was not held.

In the tournament, UMass holds a 25-29 overall record, while Boston College holds the advantage, 10-6, in the series.

All-Time vs. Siena
The Minutemen and Saints are meeting for the 34th time on Wednesday, as UMass has the advantage in the all-time series, 19-14. Siena won, 3-1, at a neutral site in the teams' first meeting on April 1, 1978. The two program's last meeting was on April 24, 2024, when the Minutemen topped the Saints, 15-4, on the road.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2025 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 142nd season. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the 2024 campaign, while 13 players join for their first season in Amherst, including 10 freshen and three transfers.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2025 season marks the 59th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Eighth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts hits the road for a three-game A-10 series against Saint Louis in Saint Louis, Missouri, on Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., before Saturday's contest begins at 2 p.m. The series finale is set for a 12 p.m. start on Sunday.
