Offense Comes Alive Early As Baseball Defeats Siena, 15-4

A seven-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Willi, aids the Minutemen to a victory.

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball exploded for seven runs in the top of the second en route to an 15-4 win over Siena College on Wednesday afternoon at Connors Park. Redshirt freshman Marc Willi highlighted the frame with a two-run home run, marking his third of the year.
 
UMass improved to 15-22 overall on the year, while Siena dropped to an 8-29 record on the season.
 
Austin Burgess, Matt Travisano and Zack Zaetta strung together three hits apiece, followed closely behind by Carter Hanson and Sam Hill with two. Mike Gervasi, Willi and Jake Given all had one hit each, which included Willi's homer. Travisano, Hanson and Hill all recorded doubles on the day. Burgess and Travisano tallied three runs each with Given, Jack Peters and Zaetta all crossing the plate twice. Burgess, Travisano, Willi and Zaetta registered two RBI apiece, while Hanson, Given and Hill had one each.
 
After the Saints scored a run in the first, UMass' offense dominated the second frame, scoring seven runs. Willi began the scoring with a two-run homer, marking the third of the season. The Minutemen continued to run up its total, adding five more runs in the inning.
 
Massachusetts kept the bats hot, tallying three more to take a 10-1 lead in the third. Burgess singled through the left side, driving in Peters and Zaetta, before a sacrifice fly from Hanson allowed Burgess to cross the plate.
 
UMass and Siena pushed one run across each in the fourth to make it 11-2, in favor of the Minutemen. A fielder's choice in the fifth helped Travisano score to extend Massachusetts' lead to 12-2.
 
Two more runs came across for UMass in the sixth, before Travisano hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give the Minutemen a 15-2 lead. The Saints grabbed two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Minutemen came out on top with a 15-4 victory.
 
Andrew Houghton (1-0) received his first career win for UMass. Houghton went three innings, allowing one run on one hit, four walks and a career-high five strikeouts. Tyler Tilton (0-1) had the loss for Siena, giving up six runs on as many hits with four runs earned and no strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.
 
Massachusetts returns to Earl Lorden Field to begin an eight-game homestand with a three-game series against Saint Joseph's on Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series will conclude on Sunday at 12 p.m. Both Friday and Sunday's contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
