Massachusetts Baseball Falls To UConn, 12-2, In Midweek Contest

UMass moves to 11-23-1 overall on the year, while UConn improves to 22-17 overall.
Carter Hanson led the team with two hits, followed by Anthony Tirado, Braden Sullivan, Marc Willi and Reece McCarthy with one. Willi registered his fourth home run of the season, while Hanson had his ninth double along with McCarthy recording his first collegiate double. Tirado and Willi scored the two runs for UMass, while Willi and Matt Travisano added one RBI apiece.
UMass scored first in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0. Tirado led off with a single through the left side, before advancing to second on a wild pitch and reaching third on a passed ball. Travisano hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Tirado.
UConn tied up the game, 1-1, in the bottom half of the first, scoring on a wild pitch. The Huskies took the lead, 4-1, in the third frame, plating three, including a run on a solo home run.
Massachusetts cut the deficit in half in the fourth, as Willi blasted a shot to right center field, marking his fourth homer of the season.
The Huskies pulled ahead in the fifth with a seven spot to lead, 11-2, before adding one in the seventh to win 12-2.
Ben Thomason (0-1) took the loss for the Minutemen, going 2.2 innings with four runs on two hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Greg Shaw III (2-0) had the win for the Huskies, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and striking out three in three complete innings of work.
Massachusetts returns to the Earl for Atlantic 10 action on Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, to face George Washington. Friday's game will begin at 3 p.m., before Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m. The series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
