Baseball Swept By George Washington In Doubleheader

The Minutemen and Revolutionaries face off for game three on Sunday, April 27, at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell in the doubleheader on Friday afternoon to George Washington at Earl Lorden Field. George Washington claimed a 9-5 win in game one, before winning 12-7 in game two of the day.

UMass moved to 11-25-1 overall on the season and 5-15 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Washington improved to 24-18 overall with an 11-9 league record.

Massachusetts and George Washington match up in the series finale on Sunday, April 27 at 12 p.m. on EPSN+.

Braden Sullivan and Jared Muñoz tallied two hits apiece to lead the team, followed by Matt Travisano, Carter Hanson and Marc Willi with one each. Sullivan recorded his fourth long ball of the season, while Hanson and Muñoz had their 10th and fourth double of the year. Jack Beverly and Sullivan each crossed the plate twice with Muñoz also scoring a run. Willi contributed a team-leading two RBI, as Hanson, Sullivan an Muñoz all had one.

After two scoreless innings, George Washington score first in the third to make it a 1-0 game.

Massachusetts took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Beverly walked to start of the inning, before Sullivan singled to the pitcher, moving Beverly to third and Sullivan advancing to second on a throwing error. Muñoz singled to center field, driving home Beverly to knot up the game. A sacrifice bunt from Willi allowed Sullivan to touch the plate to give UMass the lead.

The Revolutionaries plated a run in the top of the sixth, but a leadoff solo homer in the bottom half of the frame for Sullivan aided the Minutemen to a 3-2 lead. The home run marked the fourth of the year for Sullivan.

George Washington pushed across two more with a two-run homer in the seventh to reclaim the lead at 4-3. The Revolutionaries tacked on a run in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded balk. UMass took back a run in the bottom of the eighth with Muñoz coming across the dish on a singled from Willi down the right field line, making it a 5-4 contest.

Four more runs in the top of the ninth for the Revolutionaries pulled them ahead 9-4. The Minutemen added on one in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double from Hanson, but George Washington was able to come away with a 9-5 win in game one of the day.

Robbie O'Connor (2-6) went 7.1 innings with five runs on 12 hits, a walk and one strikeout, taking the loss for Massachusetts. Max Haug (2-1) earned the win for George Washington, going 3.2 innings with two runs allowed on three hits, a walk and striking out six.

Travisano and Hanson totaled two hits each, with Anthony Tirado and Sullivan registering one apiece. Tirado led the team in runs with two, while Hanson and Sullivan recorded four and three RBI, respectively.

George Washington got on the board first in the second to lead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly. The Revolutionaries added four more runs in the top of the fourth with  a two-run home, a RBI single and a sacrifice fly to pull ahead, 5-0.
UMass came back within two in the bottom of the fourth. Tirado led off with a bunt single, followed by Travisano with a single into right field. Hanson doubled down the right field line, driving home  both Tirado and Travisano. Hanson, then, tagged up on a sacrifice fly from Sullivan to make it a 5-3 contest.

The Revolutionaries scored on in the top of the sixth on a solo long ball, before Massachusetts took the run back in the bottom of the frame, making it a 6-4 game. With two outs, Beverly walked, before Sullivan hit an RBI double.

George Washington put up a five spot in the seventh to lead 11-4. The Minutemen added a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Sullivan.

In the ninth, the Revolutionaries tacked on another run to lead 12-4, while UMass plated two runs on a two RBI single from Hanson. George Washington held on though for a 12-7 win.

Callen Powers (3-2) took the loss for UMass, allowing five runs on eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts in five complete innings. Andrew Cutler (5-0) gave up four runs on as many hits, walked one and struck out seven in 5.2 innings of work.
