Massachusetts Baseball Walks Off With 2-1 Win Over George Mason

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Braden Sullivan lifted the University of Massachusetts baseball team to a 2-1 victory with a walk-off RBI double over George Mason in game two of the Atlantic 10 series matchup on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
UMass improves to 11-21-1 overall on the year and 5-12 in the A-10, while George Mason falls to 25-14 overall and 11-6 in league competition.
Sophomore right-hander Callen Powers dealt a complete game four-hitter and surrendered an RBI single as Powers (3-1) went the distance for the first time in his career. He struck out four batters in the win and walked just three to receive the winning decision.
Jack Beverly, Sullivan and Marc Willi recorded two hits each, including Sullivan's seventh double of the year, while Matt Travisano, Reece McCarthy and Sam Hill followed with one hit apiece. Hill and Carter Hanson scored the two runs for UMass, with Sullivan contributing the RBI.
After four scoreless innings, Massachusetts took a 1-0 lead in the fifth frame. With two outs and Hanson on first, Sullivan doubled down the left field line to drive home Hanson.
George Mason tied up the game in the eighth on an RBI single to center field. The Minutemen defense held off the Patriots in the top of the ninth to keep the contest at 1-1. In the bottom half of the ninth, Hill recorded a double to right center field, before advancing to third on a fly out. An error by the third baseman allowed Travisano to reach base and Hill to cross the plate, helping the UMass to a 2-1 walk-off victory.
Daniel Elliott (2-3) took the loss for the Patriots, going 0.2 innings with one run on one hit and striking out one.
The rubber match between Massachusetts and George Mason takes place on Sunday, April 20, at 12 p.m. on ESPN+ from the Earl.
