Massachusetts Baseball Drops Game One To George Mason, 16-7

The Minutemen and Patriots face off for game two on Saturday at 1 p.m.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 16-7 decision to George Mason on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.  

UMass moves to 10-21-1 overall on the year and 4-12 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Mason improves to 25-13 overall and 11-5 in league competition.  

Anthony Tirado, Jack Beverly and Carter Hanson tallied two hits each, while five Minutemen had one hit on the day. Tirado scored a team-high two runs, while Hanson and Sam Hill registered two RBI apiece. Beverly, Michael Toth and Reece McCarthy also had one RBI each.  

George Mason took an early 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer.  

In the third, the Minutemen scored six unanswered runs. Hill led off with a walk, before Tirado singled to left field. With one out, back-to-back RBI singles from Beverly and Hanson pushed Hill and Tirado across the plate to tie the game at 2-2. Willi walked to take first and load the bases, before Toth was hit by a pitch with Beverly touching the plate to make room on the bases. McCarthy hit an RBI to score Hanson, while Hill added a two-run single, driving home Willi and Toth to give UMass a 6-2 lead.

The Patriots put up a five spot in the fourth to reclaim the lead at 7-6. George Mason scored on an error in the fifth to extend its lead to 8-6. The Patriots pushed ahead, 11-6, with a three-run seventh inning.

Massachusetts tacked on a run on an RBI single from Hanson in the eighth to make it an 11-7 game. George Mason added five runs in the top of the ninth to take a 16-7 lead and held off the Minutemen in the bottom half for the win.

Robbie O'Connor (2-5) had the loss for Massachusetts, giving up eight runs on six hits, walking four and striking out four in five complete innings. Gardner Meeks (2-0) earned the win for George Mason, allowing only one run on six hits, a walk and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
