UMass at BU in Hockey East Quarterfinals

#19 Massachusetts Hockey Falls In Overtime At #9/7 BU, 3-2 in Hockey East Quarterfinals

March 15, 2025 | Hockey

BOSTON – No. 14 Massachusetts hockey battled back from one-goal deficits on two occasions, but No. 9/7 Boston University ultimately came out on top, 3-2 in overtime in the teams' Hockey East Quarterfinal matchup at Agganis Arena on Saturday. UMass is now 20-13-5 on the season, while the Terriers move on to the Hockey East Semifinals at 21-12-2.

"I really liked our game tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought our team played outstanding. BU gets the early goal on the power play, it's a heck of a shot. We fought back from a goal down twice in the third period where things were downhill for us. And in overtime, we get three or four chances early. The Yegorov kid played extremely well. I think I said going into this game, the goaltending probably would probably decide the game. I thought Yegorov made a lot of big saves there, especially late in the game. But I'm extremely, extremely proud of our team. I thought we played an outstanding game in a tough place against a very good team on the road. I'm frustrated for our group. I thought they deserved better tonight."

BU opened the scoring, capitalizing on the first power play opportunity of the game. Shane Lachance put back his own rebound at the near post from Cole Eiserman and Ryan Greene 5:14 into the first period.

UMass tied things up at 1-1 at the 3:34 mark of the second period. After picking up the puck from freshman Larry Keenan, Cole O'Hara circled the offensive zone before cutting to the net, where sophomore Jack Musa finished off the play with his 18th tally of the season. O'Hara's assist on the play marked his 51st point of the year, tying the UMass Division I single-season record set by James Marcou in 2009-10.

The Terriers regained the lead 11:26 into the frame as Sascha Boumedienne buried a one-timer from Jack Hughes and Tom Willander on the rush.

Sophomore Aydar Suniev scored the lone goal of the third period to force overtime. After senior Ryan Lautenbach won the puck down low, sophomore Dans Locmelis sent a centering feed into the slot that Suniev buried through traffic at the 11:17 mark.

In overtime, moments after Keenan's shot glanced off the crossbar in the BU end, Eiserman took an outlet pass from Boumedienne up the ice on a 2-on-1 that he finished off himself 2:59 into the extra frame.

UMass ended the contest with a 38-29 shot advantage and went 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Terriers were 1-for-1.

Minuteman netminder Michael Hrabal totaled 26 saves and Mikhail Yegorov stopped 36 shots for BU.

UMass will now await the NCAA Selection show on Sunday, March 23, to learn its NCAA destination and first round opponent.
