Softball Sweeps Day One of Camel Stampede

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Massachusetts (2-0) won both games on day one at the Camel Stampede, defeating ETSU (0-2) and Campbell (0-1) Friday.
Massachusetts opened their season against ETSU, cruising to a 10-2 victory to open the new campaign, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Riley Kairer (2 H, 3 RBI), Lydia Castro (2 H, 2 RBI), and Sophia Thormeyer (1 H, 2 RBI) led the run production for UMass, combining for seven RBIs and nine runs scored. Natalee Horton (1-0) earned her first win of the season, striking out six across six innings. Freshmen Thormeyer alongside fellow first-years Brooke Musch (2 R) and Lily Woodworth (1 RBI) were able to make an immediate impact in their collegiate debuts.
Carrying their momentum into the next contest, UMass claimed a 5-2 victory over Campbell to end the day. Lily Woodworth fueled the Minutewomen offense with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Odyssey Torres (2 2B) and Sarah Keagy (1 H) each added an RBI in game two. Julianne Bolton (1-0) threw a complete game, striking out eight batters to leave Campbell scoreless in six-of-seven innings. Massachusetts once again produced in the first inning, with Musch scoring off a Woodworth double. The Fighting Camels answered with two runs in the third, however back-to-back doubles by Woodworth an Torres brought in three runs to put UMass in front.
