AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts softball team begins its 2025 campaign at the Campbell Tournament, as it takes on East Tennessee University, Campbell, and Kent State University from Feb. 7 to Feb 9 in Buies Creek, N.C.
2024 Rewind
Massachusetts comes into 2025 after finishing with a 20-35 overall record and 14-12 in A-10 play. The Minutewomen made a strong A-10 Tournament run, defeating Fordham and Saint Joseph's before falling in the semifinals to Saint Louis. Sarah Keagy (12 HRs, .965 OPS) and Julianne Bolton (27 starts, 14 complete games, 124 SO) lead the returners on the offensive and defensive sides. With standout performances, including a four-homer game against Fordham, UMass showcased its potential, laying a strong foundation for future success.
Scouting the Field
East Tennessee State University (ETSU)
The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) sotball team concluded the 2024 season with an 11-39 overall record, including a 5-16 mark in Southern Conference (SoCon) play. Despite the challenging season, Junior Cameron Young tied the ETSU single-season batting average record by hitting .394 leading the SoCon in this category. She also became ETSU's all-time doubles leader, recording 17 doubles in 2024 and ranking sixth nationally in doubles per game (0.40). Young's offensive contributions were a bright spot in the Buccaneers lineup throughout the season.
Campbell
The Campbell University softball team 2024 season was highlighted by a key 3-2 victory over #3 Duke on April 10. In Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play, the Camels earned impressive series sweeps over College of Charleston, North Carolina A&T, and Delaware. Their postseason run in the CAA Championship included a 1-0 (9 innings) win over Hofstra and a 4-3 victory against Delaware before their journey ended with a 1-3 loss to UNCW on May 11.
Kent State University
Kent State University softball team ended their 2024 season with a 26-23 overall record and an 11-15 mark in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play. The team was led by sophomore Olivia Negrete, who posted a team-high .342 batting average, and senior Brianna McDonald who hit .312 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs. Freshman pitcher Taylor Moore recorded a 2.86 ERA with 98 strikeouts in 120 innings. They began the season securing victories over Evansville and Appalachian State at the Softball Classic. The team also achieved a series sweep against Ball State in late March, however, lost to Western Michigan in mid-April.
