#16 Massachusetts Hockey Drops 4-1 Decision To #1 Boston College
February 15, 2025 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 16 University of Massachusetts hockey was unable to recover from a 3-0 deficit, falling to No. 1 Boston College, 4-1 at the Mullins Center on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 16-12-2 overall, 7-9-2 in Hockey East action, while the Eagles improve to 22-6-1 overall and 14-4-1 in the league.
"It was a pretty lopsided first period; BC was excellent," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We looked like we were a tired, maybe emotionally spent team after last night's win. At times, we kind of got our feet under us, had a little bit of momentum, had some good scoring chances and if we could have found a way to maybe score late in the second period, maybe it makes the game a little different outcome. But I thought BC was the more desperate team. A lot of talent showed itself tonight. We weren't ourselves. The desperation wasn't quite there, like it was last night. I thought, BC, played an exceptional game."
Boston College scored the lone goal of the opening period at the 4:27 mark. Michael Hagens' initial shot was turned aside by goaltender Michael Hrabal, but the rebound kicked to Mike Posma who fed Eamon Powell at the opposite point for the tally.
The Eagles doubled their lead 3:13 into the second period. Senior Lucas Mercuri stood up Ryan Leonard driving to the net in front, but the loose puck popped to Gabe Perreault who who fed Andre Gasseau across the slot for the open net finish.
Boston College added another shortly after killing off a UMass power play. Leonard won the puck along the boards at center ice and sprung James Hagens on a breakaway, which he converted at 6:42.
Junior Cole O'Hara put the Minutemen on the board 15:32 into the second period with his team-leading 17th goal of the year, burying a 2-on-1 setup from sophomore Jack Musa after graduate student Linden Alger sprung the play out of the UMass defensive end.
The Eagles went on to cap the scoring with an empty net goal by Leonard from goaltender Jacob Fowler late in the third.
Boston College finished with a 45-22 advantage in shots and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-3.
Hrabal totaled 41 saves in net for UMass and Fowler posted 21 saves for the Eagles.
