Massachusetts Hockey Completes 2024-25 Roster With Addition Of Transfer Lucas Olvestad

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts has added 6-1 185-pound left-shot defenseman Lucas Olvestad to its roster as a transfer from the University of Denver, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Thursday. Olvestad, a native of Stockholm, Sweden is the second transfer and 10th new addition for the Minutemen overall this offseason, which completes the 2024-25 roster.
"Lucas is a smooth-skating defenseman that defends with his feet and his stick at a high level," said Carvel. "He will bring National Championship experience to our young back end and we hope to depend on Lucas to play against other teams top lines."
Olvestad played in 54 games for Denver over the previous two seasons, logging 10 points (1g, 9a) while helping Denver to NCHC and National titles during the 2023-24 season. As a sophomore this past season he registered six assists, blocked 16 shots and was +8. The two-time NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete appeared in 22 games as a freshman in 2022-23 and contributed four points with a goal and three assists.
Prior to his NCAA career, Olvestad played in 60 games in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for the Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2021-22 and registered 22 points (1g, 2a) in 60 contests and had a goal in two playoff games.
Olvestad previously played for the Djurgardens IF organization in Sweden United States and posted five points (2g, 3a) in 14 games with the Djurgardens junior team in 2020-21 and skated in one game with the senior team in the Swedish Hockey League. He notched 10 points (2g, 8a) in 41 contests with the U20 junior squad and skated four total games with the under-18 team in 2019-20. In 2017-18, Olvestad helped Djurgardens under-18 team win its league championship.
