UMass Extends Win Streak To Nine With 19-9 Victory Over UConn

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team extended its win streak to nine games with a 19-9 win over UConn on Wednesday night at Garber Field. Kassidy Morris tied her career-high in goals with seven while Fiona McGowan finished with seven assists and three goals for 10 points.

Jordan Dean posted 19 draw controls in the win and moved to 397 for her career, passing Caitlyn Petro (2018-21) for second-most all-time. Dean's 19 draw controls marked her seventh consecutive game with 15 or more and was her 12th double figure game of the season.

The UMass offense began the night on a blistering scoring pace with four goals in the first 1:53 of gametime to take a 4-0 lead. McGowan put home the game's first goal just under a minute in off a Charlotte Wilmoth assist before Layton Nass' second of the year made it a 2-0 game at the 13:49 mark. Wilmoth finished the night with four goals to go along with two assists for six points.

Dean found Morris for the third UMass goal in the game's opening moments before McGowan connected with Wilmoth to make it a 4-0 contest with 13:07 to go in the first. McGowan added her second assist of the night just under five minutes in, finding Morris to make it 5-0. UConn answered with two straight goals prior to a McGowan goal from Skylar Simmonds as UMass built a 6-3 lead at the break.

Defensively, the Minutewomen held the Huskies to just three goals across the second and third quarters as UMass extended its lead to 10 goals in the third quarter. After UConn pulled within two with the first goal of the second quarter with 6:11 to go in the half, UMass answered with four straight to take a 10-4 lead heading into the halftime break. Morris scored twice during the stretch, both off McGowan assists, while Simmonds and Tessa Shields added the final two goals of the opening half.

Wilmoth opened the scoring in the third off the McGowan assist prior to back-to-back man-up goals by Morris to make it a 13-4 contest at the 8:35 mark. UMass added three straight goals later in the quarter to make it a 16-5 game with McGowan, Shields, and Wilmoth each finding the back of the net during the stretch. The teams played to an even 3-3 in the final quarter with Wilmoth and Simmonds scoring before Morris capped off the evening with her seventh and final goal with 23 seconds to play.

Audra Tosone caused a team-leading three turnovers while Lauren Tolve added two more for a defense that caused seven on the day. Catrina Tobin grabbed her 10th win of the season in goal for the Minutewomen, finishing with five saves in the victory.

The Minutewomen remain at home for their final game on Garber Field on Saturday as they host George Washington for senior day at 3 p.m.
