Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball treks to Brookline, Massachusetts, to face the Northeastern Huskies on Tuesday, April 2, at Friedman Diamond, for the Opening Round of the 33rd Baseball Beanpot. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m., on FloBaseball, with Tuesday's results determining placement in the tournament's consolation and championship games on Tuesday, April 9.

UMass moved to an 8-14 overall record and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, after picking up one win in a weekend series at VCU. Northeastern sits at 21-6 overall on the season and are coming off a series sweep over CAA opponent Monmouth. The Huskies are 8-0 at home and are on a seven-game win streak.

Recap in a Minute
The Minutemen dropped the opening A-10 weekend series, 2-1, to VCU. Massachusetts won game two of the series, 4-3, with a strong pitching performance.

Renn Lints allowed 10 hits and recorded a career-high six strikeouts over a season-best eight complete innings in his third start  on the hill of the season to receive his first win of the year. Callen Powers took over on the mound in the final frame to seal the deal, earning his first career save, giving up only one hit and striking our one.

UMass held a 4-1 lead in the eighth, before the Rams tallied two runs on a solo home run and an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The Minutemen held off VCU for the final outs to pick up the 4-3 victory.

Minutemen in the Beanpot
Massachusetts has competed annually in the Beanpot since 1996 and captured the tournament crown six times (1996-98, 2000, 2008, 2012). Perhaps one of the most notable Beanpot pitching performances in program history came on April 22, 1997, when former Minuteman Scott Barnsby dealt a no-hitter at Fenway Park in the Semifinals against Northeastern. Barnsby's no-no was the first within the confines of the historic ballpark since 1965 and first such nine-inning performance by a UMass pitcher since 1957.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Beanpot Tournament was canceled, and the 2021 tournament was not held.

In the tournament, UMass holds a 25-26 overall record, while Northeastern holds a 9-7 advantage in the series.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 21 home runs in 22 games played from seven Minutemen. Mike Gervasi leads the team with seven, followed by Carter Hanson with four. Jack Beverly and Nolan Tichy registered three on the year each, while Braden Sullivan recorded two homers on the season. Austin Burgess and Justin Blumenthal have one apiece.

Gervasi registered his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season against Bucknell, before hitting his second and third in back-to-back games. He had his second homer in game three of the Bucknell series, before hitting his third in game one at No. 13 Virginia. Hanson had a home run as well in game one of the Bucknell series and tallied his second in the game two 10-5 win at No. 13 Virginia. Tichy recorded his lone homer in the final game against Bucknell.

Burgess had his first home run of the year in game two at Elon, while Beverly and Blumenthal hit their first in game three at Elon. Beverly's homer marked the first of his career. Sullivan recorded his first career grand slam, marking his first collegiate home run, at UMES.

On A Roll…
Six Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Matt Travisano sits on top of the leaderboard with six games, followed by Kevin Skagerlind with five. Burgess and Tichy are on a four and three-game streak, respectively, while Beverly is currently on a two-game hitting streak. Jake Given has registered a one-game hit streak. Travisano held the team's longest streak of 13 games before it came to an end.

Skagerlind leads the team with a 21-game reached base streak, the longest for the Minutemen, with Burgess and Tichy both on a 12-game reached base streak. Travisano follows behind with seven, while Marc Willi is on a four-game streak. Beverly and Sam Hill are on a two-game streak, as Blumenthal and Given are on a one-game reached base streak.

[Multi]ple Games
In 22 games, UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 53. Travisano leads the production with 10, which included one four-hit game and three-hit contest. Beverly and Skagerlind have had nine and seven multi-hit games, respectively, with Hanson and Gervasi following behind with five each, with a four-hit and three-hit game from Hanson and three hits in two games by Gervasi. Sullivan tallied four multi-hit contests, including registering a four-hit and a three-hit performance, while Burgess has produced three multi-hit games. Five Minutemen have totaled two multi-hit games, as Toth put together a four-hit performance in one contest and Given had a three-hit performance.

Massachusetts also contributed a total of 31 multi-RBI games, led by Hanson and Beverly with six, including two three RBI games for Beverly. Burgess and Gervasi follow behind with four apiece, which includes a four RBI and three RBI contest for Gervasi. Tichy and Sullivan have had three multi-RBI games, with Sullivan recording the team's only five-plus RBI contest, so far, this season. Travisano has had two multi-RBI games, while three players have registered one multi-RBI game, including Skagerlind and Given with three RBI in one game.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2024 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 141st season. Nineteen members of the team are back from the 2023 campaign, while 16 players join for their first season in Amherst, including eight freshman and eight transfers.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2024 season marks the 58th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Seventh-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts returns to A-10 Conference play for a three-game road series against Rhode Island on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, in Kingston, Rhode Island. Friday's contest will begin at 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 12 p.m.
