April 11, 2023 | Baseball
The Minutemen prepare for weekend series against Richmond at Earl Lorden Field.
Four Minutemen went 2-for-4 on the day, including two doubles from Carter Hanson. Nolan Tichy, Hanson and Steve Luttazi had two runs apiece, while Tichy, Hanson and Michael Toth tallied two RBI each. Will MacLean and Toth also recorded doubles on the afternoon.
Northeastern took a 2-0 jump in the top of the first, scoring on a two-run double down the left field line. UMass answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two RBI double from Hanson to bring the game to a 2-2 draw. A single through the left side from Sam Hill, scored Luttazi, before an RBI ground out from Justin Blumenthal pushed Hanson across the plate. The Minutemen took the lead at 4-2 and held it through the second.
A five-run third inning for the Huskies pulled them ahead, 7-4. Northeastern tacked on another run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, extending its lead to 11-4.
The Huskies tallied a run in the top of the sixth to make it a 12-4 game, but Massachusetts got the bats going in the bottom half to close the gap to two. Toth knocked in Hanson on a single to center field, before a single up the middle from Kyle Hoog allowed Hill to score. Zack Zaetta recorded a hit-by-pitch RBI with the bases loaded, scoring Justin Blumenthal and made it a 12-7 contest. Two unearned runs from Toth and Zaetta made it a three-run contest, and a single from Luttazi and an error from the Northeastern left fielder, pushed Tichy across the dish, with the Huskies leading 12-10.
Four runs in the seventh and two in the top of the ninth for Northeastern made it an 18-10 game. A RBI bases loaded walk from Toth scored Luttazi in the bottom of the final frame, but it was not enough, as the Huskies came out on top, 18-11.
Cole Koeppel (1-1) received the loss for UMass, allowing six runs on as many hits, two walks and no strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Jake Gigliotti (5-0) earned the triumph for Northeastern after tossing four complete innings, giving up four runs, four hits, walking two and dealing one strikeout.
