Baseball Defeated By Northeastern In Beanpot Opener

Huskies use six-run fifth to put midweek tilt out of reach.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 12-1, to Northeastern in the Opening Round of the Beanpot Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond. The Minutemen will take on either Boston College or Harvard in the Beanpot Consolation game in Brighton, Massachusetts, on April 9.
 
The Minutemen fall  to 8-54 on the year, while the Huskies improve to 22-6 overall.
 
Braden Sullivan and Kyle Hoog tallied one hit each, while Sam Hill scored the lone run for Massachusetts. Austin Burgess registered one RBI on the day.
 
VCU struck first with a two-run homer over the left centerfield wall to lead 2-0 in the opening frame. In the top of the second, UMass cut the deficit in half putting a run on the board. With Hill pinch running for Sullivan, Hoog saw four balls to put Hill and Hoog on second and first, respectively. Michael Toth hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing Hill and Hoog into scoring position. After Kevin Skagerlind was walked to load up the bases, Burgess was hit by a pitch, sending Hill from third to home to make it a 2-1 contest.
 
The bottom half of the second saw Northeastern score one more run on a sacrifice fly to push ahead 3-1. An RBI single and a two-RBI home run in the third helped the Huskies extend their lead to 6-1. Northeastern grabbed six runs in the fifth to maintain a 12-1 lead throughout the remainder of the game.
 
Justin Masteralexis (2-1) took the loss for the Minutemen, giving up six runs on 10 hits and walking three in three innings pitched.  James Quinlivan (1-0) had the win for the Huskies tossing two innings with one strikeout on the day.
 
Massachusetts returns to A-10 Conference play for a three-game road series against Rhode Island on Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7, in Kingston, Rhode Island. Friday's contest will begin at 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 12 p.m.
