Four Minutemen record multi-hit efforts in the loss.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the series finale, 10-6, to No. 13 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.

UMass moved to 2-5 overall, while Virginia improved to 10-1 on the season.

Kevin Skagerlind led the team with three hits, followed by Matt Travisano, Jack Beverly and Marc Willi with two hits each. Austin Burgess registered a team-best three RBI with Sam Hill, Travisano and Willi tallying one RBI apiece. Burgess, Travisano and Beverly all had a double on the afternoon. Six different Minutemen scored a run on the day.

Virginia held an early 6-0 lead, scoring three runs in the second and three more in the third inning. Massachusetts took a run back in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-1 contest. With two outs, Beverly doubled down the left field line, marking his third of the season, before Michael Toth was walked. Willi stepped up and singled through the middle to send Beverly home.

The bottom of the fourth saw the Cavaliers notch three more runs to extend their lead to 9-1. At the top of the seventh, UMass Braden Sullivan reached first base on a throwing error by Virginia's third baseman, and a single from Skagerlind advanced Sullivan to second. Hill singled through the right side, bringing Sullivan across the plate, making it a 9-2 game. Virginia recorded a run in the bottom half of the inning to push ahead 10-2.

The Minutemen rallied in the ninth, as Justin Blumenthal got the bats going with a single to center field. Jake Swerdloff followed with a single to right field of his own, before Jack Peters saw four balls to take his place on first. With the bases loaded, Burgess hit a double down the left field line, allowing Blumenthal, Swerdloff and Peters to touch home plate and cut the deficit in half, 10-5. After Carter Hanson was walked, Travisano registered a RBI double, sending Burgess across the plate to add to UMass' total. The rally stopped short, though, as Virginia held on for a 10-6 win.

Robbie O'Connor (0-2) took the loss for Massachusetts, giving up five runs on as many hits, two walks and striking out a career-high two batters in two complete innings. Jay Woolfolk (1-0) had the win for Virginia, tossing six complete frames, allowing only one run, eight hits, walking one and dealing five strikeouts.
