Baseball Tops Norfolk State, 5-1

March 19, 2024 | Baseball

Hanson’s home run and Tichy’s two-run double highlights the day.

NORFOLK, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball topped Norfolk State, 5-1, at Marty L. Miller Field on Tuesday afternoon. Six Minutemen registered a hit, as junior Carter Hanson and senior Nolan Tichy highlighted the day with a home run and a two-run double.

Andrew Middleton (1-0) earned the first win of his career, allowing only two hits, four walks and striking out two in a career-best five innings pitched.

Along with Hanson and Tichy, Kevin Skagerlind, Austin Burgess, Kyle Hoog and Michael Toth contributed one hit apiece. Hanson led the team with two runs, while Burgess, Jack Beverly and Tichy plated one run each. Tichy recorded a team-best two RBI, as Skagerlind Hanson and Toth batted in a run. Hoog also doubled on the day.

After three scoreless innings, Hanson recorded his third home run of the season as the leadoff in the fourth frame to get UMass on the board. The Minutemen extended their lead, 3-0, in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back walks placed Hanson and Tichy on second and first, respectively. Hoog loaded up the bases after being hit by a pitch, as Toth saw four balls to claim his place at first, sending Hanson across the plate. Skagerlind, then, hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Tichy.

Norfolk State tallied a run in the seventh on a RBI single. In the ninth, Burgess was hit by a pitch, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Travisano. With Burgess on second and Beverly on first after being hit by a pitch, a fielder's choice moved Burgess and Beverly to third and second, respectively. Tichy doubled to left field to drive in both Burgess and Beverly. Massachusetts held off the Spartans in the bottom of the final frame to come out on top with a 5-1 victory.

Liam Royster (0-2) took the loss for Norfolk State, tossing five complete innings and giving up one run on four hits, walking three and dealing six strikeouts.

Massachusetts visits Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, March 20, at 3 p.m. in Salisbury, Maryland.
