Sullivan’s Career Day Carries Baseball Over UMES, 12-5

Jack Beverly followed Sullivan with a career-high three hits, while Kevin Skagerlind, Carter Hanson and Mike Gervasi tallied two hits apiece, which included Gervasi's fourth homer of the season. Gervasi led the team with a career-high four runs as Sullivan totaled a career-best two on the day. Six other Minutemen scored a run for UMass, while five recorded one RBI each.
After a scoreless first inning, UMass plated a run in the top of the second. With two outs, Gervasi singled to left centerfield, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Sullivan hit a single of own to drive in Gervasi to give Massachusetts the early 1-0 lead.
UMES scored two runs in the bottom half of the second to take over the lead at 2-1, while tallying three mor in the third to lead, 5-1.
Massachusetts reclaimed the lead with an eight-run fourth frame. Back-to-back singles placed Beverly and Carter Hanson on second and first, respectively. Nolan Tichy brought home Beverly on a single to left field, before the Gervasi walked to load up the bases. Sullivan recorded a four-run long ball, the first of his career, to help UMass reclaim a 6-5 lead. After Jake Given singled on a bunt and Skagerlind doubled, Austin Burgess was walked as Skagerlind advanced to third and Given came across the dish on a passed ball to make it a 7-5 contest. Burgess stole second before a single from Beverly aided Skagerlind to touch the plate and a fielding error allowed Burgess to cross home to extend the lead to 9-5.
The Minutemen scored another run in the fifth on a solo home run from Gervasi to push ahead further. In the seventh, Gervasi ran home on a sacrifice fly, before Sullivan scored on a wild pitch as Matt Travisano walked. UMass held off the Hawks, defensively, to come away with the 12-5 victory.
On the mound, Justin Masteralexis (2-0) received the win, throwing a career-best 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, a walk and dealing six strikeouts. Callen Powers took over on the hill, tossing a career-high 2.1 innings, giving up one hit and striking out a career-best four.
Massachusetts wraps up its spring break trip with a three-game series at Seton Hall in South Orange, New Jersey, on Friday, March 22, through Sunday, March 24. Friday's contest begins at 4 p.m., while first pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. Sunday's series finale is slated for 12 p.m., and all three games will be streamed on FloBaseball.
