Massachusetts Baseball Drops Season Opener, 9-7

Hanson, Gervasi record first home runs of the season.
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 9-7 decision in the season opener against Bucknell on Friday evening at Shepherd Stadium. Junior Carter Hanson and graduate student Mike Gervasi both recorded their first home runs of the season.
Hanson led the team with three hits, including his first long ball of the year, and three RBI. Gervasi, Kevin Skagerlind and Justin Blumenthal strung together two hits apiece, with Gervasi registering his first homer of the season, and Skagerlind tallying a team-best two runs.
UMass took an early 2-1 lead after the first, before pushing ahead 4-1 at the end of the second frame. Bucknell got within one run, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth, but Massachusetts scored another run in the fifth to lead 5-3.
The Bison scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead at 6-5, before the Minutemen knotted the game up at six apiece in the seventh. The bottom of the seventh saw Bucknell come across the plate three more times, leading 9-6. UMass pushed across one more run in the top of the eighth, but the Bison were able to hold on to win 9-7.
Max LeBlanc started on the mound for the Minutemen, pitching three complete innings and allowing two runs on one hit, four walks and striking out a season-high seven. Renn Lints took over, going three innings, as well, with four runs, five hits, two walks and three strikeouts, before Charlie Devin (0-1) pitched two-thirds of an inning, receiving the loss.
Jonathan Adelmann earned the win for Bucknell, allowing only two runs on four hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. Nick Mulvey registered the save with a strikeout.
