Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball returns to the diamond for its season opener to take on Bucknell for a four-game series at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Virginia. First pitch is set for Friday, February 23, at 2 p.m., before a Saturday doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The Minutemen and Bison will take the field on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the final game of the series.
The Minutemen finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 14-35, including a 6-18 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2024 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 141st season. Nineteen members of the team are back from the 2023 campaign, while 16 players join for their first season in Amherst, including eight freshman and eight transfers.
All-Time vs. Bucknell
The Minutemen and Bison will meet for the 12th time in program history, since their first meeting on March 16, 1996, when UMass earned an 8-7 win in Fort Myers, Florida. Massachusetts holds the advantage at 8-3 in the all-time series. The two programs last met on March 14, 2018, as the Minutemen took down the Bucknell in a close 12-11 victory in the final game of a three-game series in Kissimmee, Florida.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2024 season marks the 58th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Seventh-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
The Minutemen head to Charlottesville, Virginia, to face No. 14 Virginia for a three-game series on Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3. Friday is slated for a 3 p.m. start, with the Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. First pitch on Sunday will be at 1 p.m.
