AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's and women's swimming and diving teams prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships on Wednesday, February 21 through Saturday, February 24, at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Virginia.
2023 Atlantic 10 Championship Recap
Last season, the Minutemen finished in third place with a final score of 458, while the Minutewomen finished in seventh with a final total of 255.
On day three of the championships, four school records fell, as Jamie MacDonald set the school record in the 400 individual medley (3:53.60) and Megan Mitchell in the 100 backstroke (54.64) for individual events. The women's 400 medley relay team consisting of Mitchell, Maggie Desmond, Summer Pierce and Caroline Mahoney swam a record-breaking 3:42.39, while the men's 400 medley relay team of Noah Witt, Jack Artis, Grant Beebe and Sammy Quigg combined for a school record time of 3:17.88.
The final day of competition last season was highlighted by three medals. Artis received the silver medal in the men's 200 backstroke with a school record time of 1:57.59, Andrew Bell earned the silver in the men's three-meter dive with a score of 369.60, and Tommy Cotner took the bronze in the three-meter event with a six-dive total of 230.30.
Former diving coach Sam Baluzy was named the Atlantic 10 Diving Coach of the Year, as Cotner was titled the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Diver.
Last Time Out
Four divers competed at the Northeastern Diving Invitational, while the men's and women's swim team took a break before the A-10 Championships. Bell sat atop the leaderboard in the one-meter dive with a total of 365.25 and broke his own previous school record of 403.73 in the three-meter dive with a personal-best score of 461.40 to claim the gold.
Cotner etched his name in the record book in both the one- and three-meter dives, landing second in school record in the one-meter dive with a personal-best of 361.50, and a scoring a 359.45 in the three-meter event, making his score the third-best in school history.
Zak Teffahi competed for the Minutemen, as well, scoring a personal-record of 217.25 in the one-meter and a personal-best 227.05 in the three-meter dive, placing sixth in both events. For the Minutewomen, Salem Howes took 11th in both the one- and three-meter events, scoring a 254.70 and a 253.05, respectively.
