October 06, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Emma Pedolzky notched her first goal of the year, while Bella Recinos scored her eight of the season.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer tied Saint Joseph's, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Massachusetts moved its overall record to 9-3-2 and 4-1-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as Saint Joseph's moved to a 4-3-6 overall mark and 0-1-4 in the league.
Senior midfielder Emma Pedolzky put the Minutewomen on top first, scoring her first goal of the season at the 10:16 mark. After graduate student defender Karina Groff corralled the ball, it was kicked away by a Saint Joseph's defender. Pedolzky picked up the ball inside the 18-yard box, before shooting the ball through traffic and finding the bottom corner of the net.
The Hawks responded within less than a minute, to tie up the match at 1-1 with a goal by Emily Hanrahan at 11:07 of the first half, as Hanrahan sailed a through ball across into the goal.
In the second half, senior midfielder Bella Recinos was awarded a penalty kick at the 56:26 mark. Recinos capitalized on the opportunity to break the tie and make it a 2-1 contest, sending the ball past SJU's goalkeeper Katie Cappelletti in the lower right corner. It marked Recinos' eighth goal of the year.
Saint Joseph's brought the game to another tie after notching a goal in the 68th minute, as Natalie Nevins cut inside just outside of the 18-yard box and fired a shot towards the near post that found its way in. Both teams took a couple of more shots, but the game finalized in a 2-2 draw.
The shots between UMass and SJU were even at nine apiece, including six shots each on target. Saint Joseph's had more shots in the first half over Massachusetts, 5-3, but UMass edged SJU in shots in the second half, 6-4. The Minutewomen held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1, over the Hawks.
Pedolzky and Recinos led the way with two shots each, while Recinos placed both of her shots on goal. Five Minutewomen took one shot with four going on net.
In net for the full 90 minutes, redshirt senior Bella Mendoza pushed aside four of nine shots faced and allowed two goals for UMass. SJU's Cappelletti saw action for the full 90 minutes, as well, stopping four of eight shots faced and let in two goals.
Massachusetts will take a break before returning to the pitch on Sunday, October 13, to compete against Dayton at Rudd Field at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
