Women’s Soccer Adds Hulings To Staff As Assistant Coach

Ryan Hulings returns to Amherst with the Minutewomen after a stint at Army.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer head coach Jason Dowiak announced Wednesday that Ryan Hulings has joined the program as an assistant coach. Hulings comes to Amherst following a season as the assistant coach at Army with the men's soccer program.
"I'm so excited to welcome Ryan back to UMass and to get to work with him again," said Dowiak. "His deep and personal connection to UMass and our Athletic Department was a key factor in knowing he was going to be the perfect person to help us continue to grow our program. Ryan's experiences over the last 4 plus years have also helped him develop as coach and he is bringing a wealth of experience and his own unique tactical methodology to us that I am keen to merge with our principles of play our playing style."
While with the Army, Hulings served as the primary goalkeeping coach. He helped the team to a 7-6-5 record and a 5-3-1 record in the Patriot League. The team made an appearance to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2022 as the No. 3 seed, while the campaign also saw the Black Knights record a dominant 4-0 win in the Army-Navy Cup in front of over 11,000 fans in Philadelphia. The four-goal margin of victory marked the largest in the 14 years of the Army-Navy Cup.
Hulings guided the goalkeepers to a .784 save percentage, which ranked second in the conference and was 28th in the country. He coached Michale Guiry to seven shutouts on the year, marking the third best in the Patriot League and 35th nationally.
Prior to his time at Army, Hulings was the assistant coach at Kentucky for two seasons. There, he oversaw goalkeeper development, recruitment management, game preparation, technology and performance and numerous other aspects. He helped the team to an NCAA Tournament Second Round Appearance, after beating both No. 1 Marshall and No. 2 West Virginia during the regular season. The Wildcats' were the first team in NCAA Division I history to knock off both a then-current No. 1 and No. 2 seed in the same season.
He supervised the development of goalkeeper Casper Mols, who was drafted by Atlanta United FC in the third round as the 77th overall pick of the 2024 Adidas MLS SuperDraft.
Before Kentucky, Hulings spent the 2022 season as an assistant coach at UAB. He aided the team to their lowest goals against average since 2018 (1.375), fewest goals conceded since 2018 (22), highest save percentage since 2018 (.761) and most shutouts since 2018 (four). Under Hulings, the Blazers keeper, Jack Hudson, was ranked No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) for total saves, and No. 2 in save percentage (.759) and saves per game (4.29) on the year.
Hulings was an assistant coach for four seasons at UMass with the men's soccer program, coaching the Minutemen to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2020-21. In the 2019 season, he supported the goalkeepers to a program milestone of 291 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal (longest streak since 1996), and maintained the lowest goals against average in the Atlantic 10 Conference (0.93).
In 2021, Hulings garnered the United Soccer Coaches Award of Distinction.
Hulings served as the assistant and goalkeeper coach at Virginia Tech for both the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He assisted the Hokies to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including an elite eight berth in 2016. With Hulings' collaboration, Ben Lundgaard was named First Team All-ACC in 2017 and a 2018 first round pick in the MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew.
He also served in the same capacity at Pitt from 2014-15 after spending the 2013 season as an assistant for both the men's and women's teams at Baldwin Wallace, while still pursuing his degree.
Additionally, he has experience as the director of goalkeeping and assistant coach of the youth program Blackrock FC – New England Region from 2019-2. Hulings also worked with the U18 US Women's National Team for the June U18/U19 domestic camp in Atlanta on the technical staff as the Goalkeeper Coach in June of 2025.
A goalkeeper himself, he led Baldwin Wallace College men's soccer program to the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament. He continued his playing career for the USL's Pittsburgh Riverhounds from 2013-15 and the NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2016, while also coaching during the professional offseason.
Hulings, a native of Dayton, Ohio, earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Management from Baldwin Wallace in 2014.
