Women’s Soccer Drops Close 3-2 Match To Dayton

October 13, 2024 | Women's Soccer

Mendoza stopped four of seven shots on the day.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer dropped a close 3-2 contest to Dayton on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field.

The Minutewomen move to 9-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Flyers improved to 11-3-0 on the year, including 5-1-0 in the league.

Dayton struck first at 11:19 of the match with a goal from Kyra Karfonta. UMass responded at the 17:00 mark with the equalizer. Senior midfielder Emma Pedolzky dribbled the ball just outside the middle of the box, before passing it to graduate student forward Karina Groff. Groff took a one-timer of her left foot, pushing it past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the year.

The Flyers broke the tie in the second half, as Laney Smith scored back-to-back goals in the 60th and 71st minute to make it a 3-1 contest. Graduate student midfielder Ella Curry was awarded a penalty kick at the 80:33 mark, capitalizing on the opportunity for her second goal of the season to cut the Minutewomen's deficit to one.

Massachusetts had another opportunity from senior forward Ashley Lamond to knot the game up, but Dayton's goalkeeper Batoul Reda was able to make the stop, allowing the Flyers to hold on to a 3-2 win.

Dayton outshot UMass, 13-5, including 7-4 with shots on goal. During the first half alone, the Minutewomen had one shot, while the Flyers took nine, before the two teams evened up the shots at four apiece in the second half.

Five Minutewomen had one shot each, with Groff, Curry, Lamond and sophomore forward Caroline Dickson placing their shots on target.

Redshirt  senior Bella Mendoz played the full 90 minutes in net, stopping four of seven shots faced and allowed three goals for UMass. Dayton's Reda saw action for the full 90 minutes, as well, making two saves and allowing two goals.

Massachusetts will make the trip to Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday, October 20, for a 2 p.m. contest against Loyola Chicago on ESPN+.
