Women's Soccer Set To Host Loyola Chicago For A-10 Quarterfinals

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer begins postseason competition on Saturday, November 2, when the team hosts No. 6 Loyola Chicago at Rudd Field for the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals. The Minutewomen, the No. 3 seed, will compete in the A-10 Championships for the seventh consecutive season at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
Massachusetts finished the regular season with a 6-2-2 mark in league play, good for third in the A-10 standings, while going 11-4-3 overall on the season.
Atlantic 10 Tournament History
UMass is making its 21st appearance in the conference tournament in program history. The Minutewomen are 14-16-1 all-time in A-10 postseason action and has won the league championship four times (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997).
Additionally, Massachusetts has made the A-10 Tournament every year since Jason Dowiak took over as head coach of the program. Under Dowiak's helm, the Minutewomen appeared in seven straight A-10 Quarterfinals, three A-10 Semifinals and were the 2021 A-10 Runner-Ups.
Saturday's contest marks the eighth time the Minutewomen have hosted the A-10 Quarterfinals in program history, hosting in 1994, 1995, 1999, 2004, 2019, 2021 and 2023. UMass first held the round in Amherst on November 4, 1994, when the team defeated Rutgers, 4-1. Massachusetts last hosted the quarterfinals on October 27 last year, resulting in a 2-1 loss over then-seeded No. 5 Duquesne.
Last Time Out
UMass secured the No. 3 seed after shutting out Davidson, 2-0 and splitting a point with VCU with a 2-2 draw last week.
Against Davidson, senior midfielder Emma Pedolzky and senior forward Ashley Lamond notched a goal in the 53rd and 62nd minutes, respectively. On the road against VCU, Lamond scored the equalizer in the second half to make it a 1-1 contest, before the Rams reclaimed the lead at 2-1. Graduate student Grace Pinkus was awarded a penalty kick at the 87:13 mark, capitalizing on the opportunity to knot the game up again and bring it to its final score of 2-2.
Redshirt senior Bella Mendoza collected her eighth shutout of the year over Davidson with four saves on the day. At VCU, she allowed two goals with no saves.
Record Book Tracking
Mendoza placed her name on the program's career saves list, ranking seventh after collecting her 259th save last week, surpassing Kelly Nigh's (2000-03) 249 career saves.
Mendoza earned her eighth shutout of the year against in the 2-0 win over Davidson etching her name in the career records for the program. The San Ramon, California, native, is now tied for sixth with Kelly Tuller (1978-80) with 19 career shutouts.
Additionally, graduate student Ella Curry put her name on the career games played list, taking over second with 88 games played, sitting behind former teammate Fiona Kane (89; 2019-23). She is also fifth with 81 games started, surpassing Danielle Dion (1994-97; 79).
Recinos is two game-winning goals away from tying for 10th in the record books with 10 game-winners in her career, as she currently has eight.
Statistically Speaking
UMass is tied for fourth in points in the A-10 with 93, while ranking fourth in both goals (34) and in assists (25). Massachusetts is tied for third in shutouts with eight on the season.
Recinos leads the team in points (20) and goals (nine), while adding two assists on the season. Her nine goals tie her for third the league, while her point total places her fifth. She also leads the team in game-winning goals with four and is tied for first in the A-10 Conference.
Recinos leads the team in shots (40) and shots on goal (24). In the league, she is tied for fifth in shots on goal.
Chandler Pedolzky, Emma Pedolzky, Ella Curry, Hannah Peric and Juliana Ryan lead the team in assists with three each on the year, while Chandler Pedolzky and Lamond follow close behind in points with 11 apiece. Lamond has five goals, while Chandler Pedolzky notched four goals on the season.
Mendoza tallied 1,620 minutes in net for the Minutewomen, averaging a 1.06 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .736 save percentage. She has also accumulated eight shutouts on the year.
Mendoza has placed herself in the conference rankings, sitting seventh in goals-against-average with a 1.06. She is also eighth in total saves with 53, while tying for third in shutouts with eight, averaging .444 shutouts per game.
Scouting Loyola Chicago
The Ramblers earned the sixth seed in the tournament after posting a 4-2-4 record in the conference and finishing with an overall record of 9-4-5. Loyola Chicago enters the A-10 Championships with a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure in the regular season finale. UMass and Loyola Chicago faced off earlier in the season on the road with the Minutewomen shutting out the Ramblers, 2-0, on October 20.
Jaimee Cibulka lead the Ramblers with 10 points, tallying four goals and two assists. Taylor Harrison and Zoe Hevey both follow with nine points each, as Harrison recorded four goals with one assist and Hevey leads the team in assists with five and added two goals. Hevey sits atop the leaderboard in shots with 50, while placing 22 on goal. In goal, Allison Deardorff has started in all 18 contests, accumulating 1,606 minutes. She recorded nine shutouts on the year, and has a 0.67 GAA and a .854 save percentage.
Weekly Honors
Hannah Peric collected the first Atlantic 10 weekly accolade of the year for the Minutewomen on September 3. She earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after playing a key role for UMass' defense to post a 0-0 shutout and hold Boston College to one goal in a 2-1 victory. Peric combined for 180 total minutes on the week.
Mendoza garnered the second A-10 weekly award, tabbing A-10 Defensive Player of the Week on September 9. She earned the accolade after picking up her third and fourth shutouts of the year with a 4-0 win against Northeastern and a 3-0 win at Bryant. Allowing no goals, she had a 1.000 save percentage. Against Northeaster, the San Ramon, California, native made two saves, while stopping three shots at Bryant. The two shutouts also marked the 14th and 15th of her career at the time.
Curry received the third weekly honor of the season, and first A-10 Offensive Player of the Week award on September 30. She competed for 160 minutes and tallied five points with one goal and three assists. Curry also had two shots, both on target. Against Fordham, the graduate student registered two assists on the day for two points, while notching her second goal of the season and an assist against Rhode Island for three points.
Lamond tabbed the fourth A-10 weekly award for the Minutewomen on October 28 after being named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week. The accolade marked the first of her career, as she totaled four points on two goals, while taking six shots with three on target. Lamond notched the second goal for UMass against Davidson and recorded the first equalizing goal at VCU. On the pitch, she played over 124 minutes.
