Women’s Soccer Secures 2-1 Win At St. John’s In Season Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer used a pair of early goals to help the squad secure a 2-1 win over St. John's in the squads' 2026 season opener on Thursday evening at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Minutewomen wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, pulling in front, 1-0, in the eighth minute. Annie McCaffrey sent a pass ahead to Kaila Steen who found Caroline Dickson with a cross in the box for the header to finish the play.
Just over four minutes later, UMass doubled its lead. Peyton Costello served a free kick into the penalty area that Amelia Deren settled for McCaffrey who sent it home.
The Red Storm's best chance of the first half came in the 29th minute when Sia Bharadwaj sent a ball off the left post. UMass controlled much of the opening 45 minutes, out-shooting St. John's, 11-3 in the period.
In the 66th minute, the Red Storm capitalized on a miscue by the Minutewomen to halve their deficit. Nora Basile intercepted a goal kick and sent the ball into an open net.
The UMass defense held strong, though, to help close out the contest. Shots were 5-1 in favor of St. John's in the second half with corner kicks at 3-1, Red Storm.
Leah Nisenfeld had two saves on the evening for the Minutewomen, while Kayla Bower turned aside six in net for St. John's.
UMass will be back in action next Thursday, August 20, when the team will play host to NJIT on Rudd Field at 4 p.m.
