AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team returns home to Rudd Field for a Monday afternoon matchup against Yale. The Minutemen and the Bulldogs kick off at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
Protecting The Fort
The Minutemen hold a 13 match unbeaten streak at Rudd Field after posting a 4-0-4 record at home a season ago. UMass last lost on its home pitch on Sept. 18, 2021.
Series History
Monday's game marks the 14th all-time meeting between the Minutemen and the Bulldogs with Yale leading the series with a 10-3 record. UMass won the last matchup at Yale in 2021 with a game-winning goal in the 87th minute.
Hot Start for Hughes
Alec Hughes recorded a brace in the season opener after a junior season that saw the forward named the Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in goals and points in 2022. The senior followed it up by scoring in a 1-0 win over CCSU to give him 23 career goals and move him four away from top-10 all-time at UMass.
Zonk's Helping Hand
Nick Zielonka recorded a pair of assists in the first two games to rank within the top-10 nationally in both assists and assists per game after the opening week of play. Zielonka picked up three assists during his junior season and finished with 15 points.
Sef From The Spot
Sophomore Sefunmi Taiwo scored his first goal of the season and second of his collegiate career in Friday night's game against Brown. The forward converted from the penalty spot in the 87th minute for the lone UMass goal of the evening.
The Opener
The Minutemen played to a 2-2 draw in the season opener at home against Northeastern on Aug. 24 behind a pair of goal from Alec Hughes. Hughes netted his first of the day on a Ryan Levay assist in the 25th-minute and added his second in the 54th-minute on an assist from Nick Zielonka. UMass put seven of its 12 shots on goal with Hughes finding target on three of four while Matt Cence put all three attempts on frame.
Player To Watch
Alec Hughes was named to the United Soccer Coaches Forwards to Watch List during the offseason and was selected to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Squad.
Looking Ahead
The Minutemen head back out on the road on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against Providence. UMass then wraps up its stretch of three of four games against Ivy League competition with Dartmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
