Alec Hughes scored twice while Brad Moccio added the other goal in Monday's shutout win.
AMHERST, Mass.- Alec Hughes netted a pair of goals and Nick Zielonka dished out two assists as the Massachusetts Minutemen (2-1-1) picked up a 3-0 victory over the Yale Bulldogs (0-2-0) on Monday evening at Rudd Field. The win extended UMass's home unbeaten streak to 14 games.
Alec Hughes opened up the scoring in the 16th minute as he struck one to the bottom left corner from just inside the 18 on a feed from Andrew Ortiz.
Aiden Kelly nearly extended the first half lead for the Minutemen as he had one of his three shots ring off the crossbar in the 29th minute.
Brad Moccio pushed UMass' lead to two as he headed one in off a Nick Zielonka free kick in the 75th minute for his first goal of the season.
Then in the 82nd minute Bryant Keeney sent in a cross which Zielonka headed down for Hughes who blasted one in to seal the victory for the Minutemen. Hughes' brace brings him to a team-leading five goals on the year and puts him three away from moving into the top-10 all-time at UMass in career goals.
The Minutemen ended the match with a 12-6 shot advantage, led by Alec Hughes who registered 7 total shots and 3 of which were on goal, while Aidan Kelly had a trio of shots as well.
UMass earned the clean sheet as goaltender Matt Zambetti turned aside all four of Yale's shots on goal in the first half while the defense held the Bulldogs without a shot on target through the final 45 minutes.
The Minutemen are on the road this Saturday as they travel to Providence College for a 7 p.m. kickoff. UMass will return to Rudd Field Tuesday, September 12, as they take on Dartmouth College at 4 p.m.
