AMHERST, Mass - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team is on the road this Tuesday, September 19th, when they take on Holy Cross in an interstate matchup. The Minutemen and Crusaders kick off at 7 p.m. from Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium on ESPN+.
Series vs. Holy Cross
Tuesday's matchup is the first meeting between the two Massachusetts schools since 2008 when Holy Cross defeated UMass 1-0. The last time the Minutemen beat the Crusaders was in 1996, which resulted in a 5-0 shutout. UMass leads the all-time series with a 5-3-1 record.
Mr. 300
Head coach Fran O'Leary earned his 300th career win against Providence in his 33rd year as a collegiate coach. O'Leary holds a 300-191-73 (.597) record with coaching stints at Elmira, Kenyon, Dartmouth, George Mason, and Bowdoin. Coach O'Leary sits just two wins away from tying Jeff Gettler (1982-90) for third all-time in wins at UMass with 68.
Hughes' Place In The Record Books
After netting a penalty kick in a draw against Dartmouth, Alec Hughes is tied for ninth in all-time career goals with 27. Hughes is one goal away from tying Alfred Hoelzel (1951-53) for eighth all-time. Hughes is currently in an eight-way tie for the nation's lead in total goals with seven through equally as many games. He is also ranked eighth in points (14) and third in goals per game (1.00).
UMass Student-Athlete Of The Week
Nick Zielonka was tabbed Student-Athlete of the Week for his performances against Yale and Providence last week. Zielonka helped the Minutemen pick up two non-conference wins by recording four assists and scoring the game-winning goal against Providence. Zielonka is also ranked third in the nation and leads the Atlantic 10 in total assists with six in seven games.
Shot Stopper
Matt Zambetti was recently named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Minutemen earn a pair of wins. The graduate student goalkeeper had a career-best nine-save performance against Providence College that followed a four-save clean sheet against Yale. Zambetti currently ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in saves with 28 through seven games. He is also third in the conference in shutouts with two.
Looking Ahead
The Minutemen return to Rudd Field Saturday, September 23rd for an Atlantic 10 matchup with VCU at 12 p.m. UMass looks to extend their 15 game home unbeaten streak in front of some former Minutemen who are back on campus for the Alumni Game.
