Minutemen Fall At Holy Cross, 1-0

The Crusaders scored the lone goal in the 86th minute.
WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell to Holy Cross on Tuesday night at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium, 1-0. The Minutemen drop to 3-3-2 while the Crusaders improve to 2-4-2.
The Minutemen had a few of their best scoring opportunities early on when Nick Zielonka put a shot just wide off an Alec Hughes Cross in the fifth minute. Later in the half, Aidan Kelly got his head on a ball inside the box but was blocked by a Crusaders defender.
In the 24th minute, Holy Cross had a trio of shots inside the box. The UMass back line however, stood strong as they blocked all three shots.
The last scoring chance of the half for the Minutemen came in the 40th minute as Matt Cence put a shot just above the crossbar. The first half ended with zero shots on goal from either side.
The Crusaders put the first pair of shots on target in the 66th minute, forcing Matt Zambetti to make a few routine saves on shots outside the box.
The last scoring opportunity for the Minutemen came in the 75th minute as Pierre de la Croix-Vaubois sent a cross in to Shane Velez. Velez was alone with Holy Cross goalkeeper Tristan Stephani, who made one of his four saves on the night.
Holy Cross broke the deadlock when Evan Jones netted one from outside the 18 in the 86th minute. Jones' second goal of the season proved to be the game winner for the Crusaders.
The Minutemen return home to Rudd Field for a three game home stretch. UMass will host VCU Saturday at 12 p.m. for their Alumni Weekend. The Minutemen will then have matches against #17 Vermont and Atlantic 10 opponent George Washington.
