September 16, 2023 | Men's Soccer
UMass loses 1-0 to Duquesne despite 26-5 shot advantage.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell on the road to Duquesne to open up Atlantic 10 play on Saturday night. The game marks the first time this season the Minutemen have been shut out.
UMass produced chances at goal early when Pierre de la Croix-Vaubois sent a cross to Nick Zielonka, who put a shot off the left woodwork in the sixth minute. Later in the possession, Alec Hughes shot one to the bottom left corner but was turned aside by Duquesne goalkeeper Zoltan Nagy.
In the 12th minute, Duquesne's Ask Ekeland put away a one-timer for the first and only goal of the contest. After the goal, the Minutemen built up an 11-2 shot advantage but were unable to find the back of the net before halftime.
After the break, Hughes almost tied the game in the 63rd minute but was called offside just before he put one past Nagy.
Matt Zambetti made back-to-back saves in the 64th minute to keep UMass within striking distance. Zambetti finished with four saves including three in the second half.
The Minutemen's final chance to knot the game was when De La Croix-Vaubois nearly put one top bin in the 85th minute but Nagy was able to get a hand on it for one of his six saves.
UMass finished the contest with a 26-5 shot advantage over Duquesne. Of those 26 shots, the Minutemen put six on goal while the Dukes put all five on target.
The Minutemen are back on the road Tuesday as they travel to Worcester for an 8 p.m. kickoff against Holy Cross. UMass returns to Rudd Field on Saturday, September 23rd when VCU comes to Amherst for a conference matchup at 12 p.m.
