AMHERST, Mass - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team opens up conference play as they hit the road for a game with Duquesne on Saturday, September 16th. The Minutemen and the Dukes kick off at 7 p.m. from Rooney Field on ESPN+.
Series vs. DuquesneÂ
Saturday's match will mark the 20th all-time meeting between the Minutemen and the Dukes. In last year's contest, the two teams played to a 0-0 draw at Rudd Field where the Dukes were ranked 25th nationally. UMass currently leads the series with a 9-6-5 record.
Mr. 300
Head coach Fran O'Leary picked up his 300th career win in his 33rd year as a collegiate coach. O'Leary holds a 300-190-73 (.598) record with coaching stints at Elmira, Kenyon, Dartmouth, George Mason, and Bowdoin.Â
Hughes Amongst All-Time Leaders
After netting a penalty kick in Tuesday's match against Dartmouth, Alec Hughes is tied for ninth in all-time career goals. His 27 is even with Ptah Myers (2000-03) and Steve Cesnek (1986-89). One more goal will put Hughes in a tie for eighth all-time with Alfred Hoelzel (1951-53).
Dynamic Duo
Alec Hughes and Nick Zielonka have been off to a hot start as the senior teammates are amongst the nation's leaders in offense. Hughes leads the nation in total goals with seven through six games. He also is nationally in points (14) and is fifth in goals per game (1.17). Zielonka on the other hand leads the nation in total assists with six in equally as many games. The pair have connected four times, as Zielonka has picked out Hughes in games against Northeastern, Central Connecticut State, Yale, and Providence.
Shot Stopper
Matt Zambetti was recently named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Minutemen earn a pair of wins. The graduate student goalkeeper had a four-save clean sheet against Yale which he promptly followed up with a career-best nine-save performance against Providence College. Zambetti currently ranks first in the Atlantic 10 in saves with 24 through six games. He also has a pair of shutouts which ranks him third in the conference.
Looking Ahead
The Minutemen follow Saturday's contest with an interstate matchup against Holy Cross on Tuesday, September 19th for an 8 p.m. kickoff in Worcester. UMass continues with Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, September 23rd as they welcome VCU to Rudd Field for a 12 p.m. game.
