AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team returns home to Rudd Field on Tuesday for a matchup against Dartmouth. The Minutemen and Big Green kickoff at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
Series vs. Dartmouth
Tuesday's match marks the 40th all-time meeting between the two teams with Dartmouth holding a 27-8-4 series advantage. The Minutemen won the last meeting in 2022 with a 3-1 win at Dartmouth behind a pair of goals from Alec Hughes in the first 21 minutes of play while Brad Moccio added another first half goal for UMass.
Zonk's Helping Hand (Or Foot)
Nick Zielonka leads all of Division I in total assists with six through five games. Zielonka added four more assists to his tally last week, beginning with a pair in a 3-0 win over Yale last Monday. In Saturday's 3-2 win over Providence, Zielonka dished out two more helpers and added the game-winning goal in the 77th-minute.
Hughes' Hot Start
Alec Hughes leads the Minutemen with six goals and ranks second nationally in total goals and third in total points. The senior has posted multi-goal efforts in two of five matches for the Minutemen, including two-goal games against Northeastern and Yale.
Protecting The Fort
The Minutemen are in the midst of a 14-match unbeaten streak at Rudd Field dating back to Sept. 18, 2021. UMass posted a 4-0-4 record at home a season ago and are currently 2-0-1 at Rudd Field this season.
Approaching Top-10
Senior forward Alec Hughes is just one goal away from moving into a tie for ninth all-time at UMass in career goals. A goal for Hughes would tie him with Ptah Myers (2000-03) and Steve Cesnek (1986-89) for ninth most in a career at UMass. Alfred Hoelzel (1951-53) sits eighth with 28 goals while Dave Siljanovski (1993-96) is seventh with 30.
Win No. 300
Head coach Fran O'Leary recorded his 300th collegiate head coaching win with a 3-2 victory over Providence on Saturday. O'Leary holds a 300-190-72 (.598) all-time coaching record and has a 66-55-26 (.537) mark at UMass. He currently ranks fourth all-time at UMass in wins and is three away from passing Jeff Gettler (1982-90) for third all-time.
Shot Stopper
Matt Zambetti was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week as he tied his career-high with nine saves in Saturday's 3-2 win over Dartmouth and recorded his second shutout of the year against Yale. Zambetti ranks among the top-25 nationally in total saves with 21 and is 19th among DI leaders in shutouts this year with two.
Looking Ahead
The Minutemen open Atlantic 10 play on Saturday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Duquesne. UMass concludes its two-game road trip on Tuesday, Sept. 19 with an 8 p.m. start at Holy Cross and then returns home for Alumni Weekend on Sept. 22.
