Alec Hughes scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the 62nd-minute.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team picked up its first win of the new campaign with a 1-0 shutout victory over Central Connecticut State on Monday evening at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (1-0-1 Overall) extended their home unbeaten streak to 13 games.
UMass held a seven to one shot advantage in the first 45 minutes and put four shots on target in the first 12 minutes of action. Alec Hughes hit the crossbar just 46 seconds into the game before Aidan Kelly and Nick Zielonka forced CCSU's Mick Sipples to make consecutive saves over a one-minute span around the nine-minute mark.
Hughes broke through for the game's first goal in the 62nd minute after Zielonka played a through ball to the forward, who split defenders in front of goal and played a right-footed shot into the right corner of goal. Hughes' goal marked his third of the season and moves him to four goals away for 10th-most all-time in career goals at UMass.
Matt Zambetti stopped both shots that CCSU put on frame, including a stop on an Andres Aldeguer shot in the 84th-minute. The UMass defense allowed just five shot attempts in total on the evening while the attack generated 14 shots with half on goal.
The Minutemen head to Providence, R.I. for their first road game of the new season as they take on Brown on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
