Hughes Nets Two As Minutemen Open Season With 2-2 Draw

Alec Hughes scored twice in the 2-2 draw with Northeastern in the season opener.
AMHERST, Mass. – Alec Hughes scored twice as the Massachusetts Minutemen picked up a 2-2 draw against Northeastern on Thursday evening at Rudd Field. The game marked the 12th game in a row that the Minutemen (0-0-1 Overall) have gone unbeaten at home dating back to Sept. 18, 2001.
Ryan Levay found Hughes on a run down the middle of the field in the 25th minute to set up Hughes' left footed shot into the far corner.
Northeastern (0-0-1 Overall) leveled the contest in the 44th minute by way of a Jack Monte header following a corner from Federico Tellez. Monte and Tellez connected for a second equalizer in the 70th minute off a corner kick to bring it to a 2-2 final.
Hughes netted his second of the day and 22nd of his career to give UMass a 2-1 lead in the 54th-minute. Nick Zielonka found space down the right side and played a cross in to Hughes at the near post, who slotted it home to his right.
Matt Cence nearly gave UMass its third goal of the evening in the 77th minute as he brought the ball in field to set up a left footed shot that was pushed off the post by the Huskies' Gregor Shaw.
UMass finished with a 12 to nine shot advantage and put seven of its 12 shots on target. Hughes led the attack with four shots, including three on goal, while Cence put all three of his attempts on frame.
Matt Zambetti finished with two saves in 90 minutes in goal for the Minutemen while Gregor picked up five saves for Northeastern.
The Minutemen conclude their two-game homestand to open the regular season on Monday with a 5 p.m. kickoff against Central Connecticut State on Rudd Field.
