Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball returns to Atlantic 10 Conference competition on Friday, April 7 through Sunday, April 9, when it hosts Davidson College for three contests. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series will conclude on Sunday at 12 p.m. Both Friday and Sunday's games will be streamed on ESPN+ at Earl Lorden Field.  
 
UMass holds a 4-16 overall record, including a 0-3 A-10 record, after No. 9 Boston College eked out a 13-12 victory in the Opening Round of the Beanpot Championships on Tuesday afternoon. Davidson has an overall record of 16-11 and a league record of 2-1 with a 5-4 win on Tuesday over Presbyterian. The Wildcats are 2-3 on the road.
 
Recap in a Minute
UMass and No. 9 Boston College faced off in the 32nd Opening Round of the Beanpot Championships on Tuesday afternoon, with the Eagles edging the Minutemen, 13-12, at the Earl.
 
Massachusetts exploding in the first two frames, tallying five runs in each inning, before holding a one-run lead in the seventh. A two-run eighth for BC put them ahead for the win. Steve Luttazi and Carter Hanson both contributed a homer.
 
Luttazi (4-for-5) had his first four-hit game of the season with three RBI, including his second home run of the year. Hanson, Will MacLean and Mike Gervasi all tallied two hits apiece, while Hanson added three RBI of his own on a home run and Gervasi recorded two. Luttazi scored three runs, as Hanson and Gervasi crossed the plate twice for the Minutemen. Zack Zaetta, Kevin Skagerlind, Michael Toth and Justin Blumenthal all contributed one hit and one run each, with Zaetta and Sam Hill registering an RBI apiece.
 
All-Time vs. Davidson
The Wildcats hold a 10-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Minutemen, as the two teams will meet for the 14th time in program history. A new series, UMass and Davidson first met on March 8, 2014, prior to Davidson joining the A-10, and the Wildcats came away with a 13-3 win on the day. The two teams met last season for a three-game series, as Davidson swept UMass.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 12 homeruns in 20 games played, from seven Minutemen. Hanson leads the team with three long balls on the season, while Luttazi, Nolan Tichy, and Will MacLean follow with two apiece. Ryan Coleman, Gervasi and Sam Hill have one each on the year.
 
Hanson recorded his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season at Navy, before adding another in the game three of the UNC Asheville series. Coleman garnered his first career homer in game one at UNC Asheville, while Hill registered his first home run in game three of at UNC Asheville. Luttazi and MacLean had their first of the season in the Navy series in game three and game two, respectively. Gervasi had his first homer in game one of the Penn series, as Tichy garnered his first of the season in game three at Penn.

On A Roll…
Eleven Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Zaetta sits atop the leaderboard with six, while Blumenthal has had three contests. Gervasi, and MacLean tallied a two-game hitting streak, as six different Minutemen are on a one-game streak. Hanson and Zaetta hold the longest streak with six games, but Hanson's came to an end. Tichy has totaled five games, and Jacob Sloss, Gervasi and Luttazi all tallied four games each before those streaks came to an end.
 
Zaetta is on a current nine-game reached base streak, marking the longest for the Minutemen. Tichy follows with six, as MacLean and Luttazi registered five straight games. Toth recorded a four-game reached base streak, with Sloss and Blumenthal tallying three, and Gervasi with two. Four different members have totaled a streak of one. With Zaetta holding the longest streak, MacLean garnered the second longest with eight, before the streak came to an end.

[Multi]ple Games
UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 35. Zaetta and Luttazi lead the production of eight, which included three three-hit contests and one four-hit contest for Luttazi. MacLean registered four, while Tichy and Hanson have four, including two four-hit games for Tichy. Gervasi tallied three multi-hit contests, and Chris Pearsons, Sloss and Toth all contributed one each to UMass' multi-hit total.
 
Massachusetts has also contributed a total of 15 multi-RBI games, led by Luttazi with four, including one three-run contest. Hanson registered three, which included a three-run game of his own, as Tichy and Gervasi follow with two apiece. Four Minutemen have tallied one multi-RBI game each, including a three-run contest from Sloss.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2023 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 140th season. Twenty-one members of the team are back from the 2022 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including nine freshman, one sophomore and four transfers.
 
Keeping it in the Family
The 2023 season marks the 57th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Sixth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
