Davidson Takes Game One From Baseball, 9-2

April 07, 2023 | Baseball

Lints records a career best four strikeouts on the day.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 9-2, to Davidson College on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Graduate student Renn Lints recorded a career-high in strikeouts with four in three innings pitched.

UMass moved 4-17 overall on the year and 0-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson improved to 17-11 and 3-1 in conference play.

Sam Hill tallied a team best two hits on the afternoon, as five other Minutemen totaled one hit each. Tichy contributed a hit on a long ball, while adding a run and a RBI. Zack Zaetta also tallied a run for UMass.

Davidson grabbed a 2-0 lead early, leading off the contest with back-to-back homers in the top of the first. Massachusetts cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning, making it a 2-1 game. Zaetta led reaching first on an error, before Kevin Skagerlind hit a single through the right side to move Zaetta to second. Will MacLean reached on a fielder's choice, as Skagerlind was out at second and Zaetta ran to third. In the same play, an error allowed MacLean to advance to second and Zaetta to cross the plate for an unearned run.

The Wildcats tacked on another run on a RBI single in the second to pull ahead, 3-1 in the third. A two-run double and a two-RBI home run for Davidson extended its lead to 7-1 in the fourth frame, before a RBI single added one more run in the fifth.

In the seventh inning, Tichy led off with a solo homer to give UMass its second run of the day, making it an 8-2 contest. Hill singled to get on base, before a two-out single up the middle from Mike Gervasi advanced Hill to third. Zaetta saw four balls to take his place at first to load up the bases, but the rally fell short with the fly out to left field.

Davidson tallied one more run in the eighth to bring the game to its final score of 9-2.

Max LeBlanc (0-2) received the loss for Massachusetts, allowing seven runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two in 3.1 innings of work. The Minutemen saw three other pitchers on the afternoon, including Lints who went three complete innings and giving up one run on three hits, walkings two and dealing a career-high four strikeouts. Will Shomberg (5-1) earned the winning decision for Davidson, only allowing two runs, six hits, one walk and striking out four in seven complete innings.
