Baseball Drops Series Finale, 12-3, At Davidson

Wilde records fifth home run of the season in the loss.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped a 12-3 decision in the series finale with Davidson College on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
 
UMass moves to 20-21-1 overall and 7-11 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Davidson improves to 37-9 overall on the season, including a league record of 15-3.
 
Cole Hebble tallied a team best two hits, including a double, as Collin Shapiro and Aidan Wilde had one hit each, with Wilde's lone hit coming off his fifth long ball of the year. The trio also drove in one run apiece, while Shapiro, Wilde and Nolan Tichy all scored for the Minutemen.
 
UMass struck first on Hebble's two-run double I nthe top of the first inning, but the Wildcats put up three runs in the bottom half, before tacking on four more runs in the second to take a quick 7-1 lead. Davidson extended its lead in the fourth, making it an 8-1 contest.
 
The Minutemen added to its tally, courtesy of Wilde's solo shot to left field in the top of the fifth frame. Davidson pushed further ahead, though, with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, bringing the score to 9-2.
 
Massachusetts earned one more run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Shapiro, knocking in Tichy from scoring position to make it a 9-3 game. An RBI single and a two-run single, both to center field, allowed the Wildcats to bring three more runs across the plate and secure the 12-3 victory.
 
Zach Clevenger (1-2) had the loss for UMass after allowing seven runs on as many hits, walking one and striking out two in three innings of work. Ryan Feczko (9-0) earned the win for Davidson, pitching five complete frames, and giving up two runs on two hits, walking four batters and totaling two strikeouts.
 
The Minutemen will take a five-day break before returning to action for a three-game series against VCU on Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15, with the series start at 3 p.m. on Friday on ESPN+. Sunday's game will honor our 18 seniors.
