April 28, 2023 | Baseball

Four Minutemen freshmen record career highs and collegiate firsts in the win.

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball claimed a 7-5 victory over St. Bonaventure University on Friday morning at Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field. Redshirt freshman Sam Belliveau and freshmen Justin Blumenthal and Michael Toth all recorded career highs on the day, while Belliveau and fellow redshirt freshman Mikey Jensen received their first collegiate win and save, respectively.

UMass improved to 9-25 overall and 2-11 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure fell to 6-31 on the season, including 3-10 in the league.

Blumenthal led the team with a career high three hits, including a double, and added a career-best two runs. Toth, Kevin Skagerlind and Nolan Tichy followed with two hits apiece, as Toth recorded a career high two doubles on the day. Will MacLean had one hit on a triple. MacLean and Blumenthal tallied two runs each, while Tichy and Toth registered two RBI apiece. Skagerlind, MacLean and Carter Hanson also had a RBI on the day.

On the mound, Belliveau (1-1) picked up his first collegiate winning decision for UMass, tossing three complete innings and allowing only two hits. Belliveau also dealt a career-best four strikeouts. Jensen entered for 0.1 innings to earn his first collegiate save, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one.

UMass jumped ahead 1-0 early in the top of the first, as Skagerlind led off with a single. MacLean walked, before Tichy reached on a fielder's choice with MacLean advancing to second. Both MacLean and Tichy stole third and second, respectively, with Steve Luttazi at the plate. Luttazi took his place at first after being walked to load up the bases. St. Bonaventure's pitcher walked the second consecutive batter, as Hanson advanced his teammates around to claim first, pushing MacLean across the dish.

The Bonnies took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first on a two-run single and scored another run in the third to pull ahead, 3-1.

In the fourth frame, Blumenthal doubled down the right field line, before Sam Hill walked to put runners on second and first. Toth drove in Blumenthal on his first double of the morning to bring UMass within one. With one out, Skagerlind doubled to right center field, as Hill came around to score and knot the game up at 3-3. A ground out from MacLean allowed Toth to run from third to home and give the Minutemen a 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Massachusetts put up one run in the next three frames. A RBI single from Tichy in the sixth gave UMass a 5-3 lead, before Toth's second double in the contest scored Blumenthal to extend the team's lead to 6-3 in the seventh inning. The eight saw a sacrifice fly from Tichy that brought Maclean across home plate.

St. Bonaventure added two more runs to its total in the final inning, but the Minutemen were able to close out the game with its final out and hold off the Bonnies to win 7-5.

Nathan Klodowski (0-3) gave up one runs on two hits and struck out one batter in 0.1 innings of work to receive the loss for St. Bonaventure.
