Baseball Splits Twin Bill At St. Bonaventure

Following the split, UMass sits at 10-26 overall, including 3-12 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure holds a 6-33 overall record and a 4-11 record in the league.
Massachusetts is back in action on Wednesday, May 3, when the team travels to Hamden, Connecticut, to face Quinnipiac for a non-conference midweek matchup at 3 p.m.
Game 1
Massachusetts 7, St. Bonaventure 6
Justin Blumenthal led UMass with four hits, as four Minutemen followed with two hits apiece, including Will MacLean who added a double to his stat sheet. Carter Hanson totaled a team-high three runs, while Kevin Skagerlind, Blumenthal, Michael Toth and Chris Pearsons all had one each. Seven Minutemen recorded a RBI.
After two scoreless innings, Massachusetts struck first, putting up two runs in the top of the third. Pearsons reached first on a fielding error by the Bonnies first baseman, before Skagerlind singled through the left side, moving Pearsons into scoring position at third. MacLean cranked a double a down the right field line, allowing Pearsons to score. Nolan Tichy grounded out to the shortstop, as Skagerlind took the opportunity to cross the plate and give UMass a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Bonnies totaled five runs to claim the lead. The Minutemen began to chip away at their deficit in the fourth tallying three runs. After Hanson reached on a fielding error by St. Bonaventure's left fielder and advanced to third, Blumenthal hit a single to the shortstop, bringing home Hanson. Toth walked and Sam Hill singled to center field, advancing Blumenthal to third and Toth to second. Blumenthal touched the plate on Pearsons RBI single to make it a 5-4 game. A sacrifice fly by Skagerlind pushed Toth across the dish, tying the contest up at 5-5.
UMass tacked on another run in the fifth frame to reclaim the lead at 6-5. Hanson hit a single, before Blumenthal hit a single of his own to put runners on second and first, respectively. Toth stepped up to the plate and singled to center field, allowing Hanson to come home.
The seventh inning saw both Massachusetts and St. Bonaventure notch one run each. In the Minutemen's half, Hanson and Blumenthal hit back-to-back singles up the middle, before Toth reached on a fielder's choice to load up the bases with Blumenthal taking second base on a throwing error and Hanson advancing to third. Hill singled to left field, sending Hanson to home, extending UMass' lead to 7-5. The Bonnies' sacrifice fly added to their tally, but UMass shut down the offense to edge St. Bonaventure, 7-6.
Zack Given (1-1) earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking two and having struck out three. Charlie Devin picked up his first collegiate save, allowing only one hit and one walk in 2.2 innings of work. Luke Roggenburk (0-3) took the loss for St. Bonaventure after getting two strikeouts, allowing six runs, nine hits and two walks in 4.2 frames.
Game 2
St. Bonaventure 7, Massachusetts 5
Tichy led the production with a team best three hits, including his eighth home run of the season, as Hanson, Blumenthal and Pearsons all followed with one each. Tichy and Blumenthal registered two RBI apiece, while Pearsons added one RBI on the afternoon. Five Minutemen contributed a run to UMass' total. Hanson and Blumenthal each recorded a double on the day.
St. Bonaventure got on the board first in the second inning on two-run double. The Bonnies added three more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single to take a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, MacLean led off with a walk, before Tichy crushed a two-run shot over the left center field fence to make it a 5-2 contest. With one out, Hanson doubled to right center field as Blumenthal followed with a double of his own down the left field line to score Hanson and get back within two. A two-out RBI single from Pearsons pushed Blumenthal across the plate to close the Minutemen's deficit to one run at 5-4. The Bonnies took back the two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two RBI single, pulling ahead 7-4.
Steve Luttazi started off the eighth with a walk, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With one out recorded, another wild pitch sent Luttazi to third. Blumenthal grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Luttazi to touch the dish and put UMass back within two at 7-5. The Minutemen were unable to get the bats going for a rally in the ninth, as the final score of 7-5 went in St. Bonaventure's favor.
Jack Steele (0-4) had the loss, going 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and dealing four strikeouts. For St. Bonaventure, Gabe Watts (3-5) earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, walking two and striking out four. Ryan O'Connell notched the save for the Bonnies, giving up one run, one hit, one walk and having struck out five in 3.2 innings of work.
